Service with Smiles

Abby and her friend Britley did a little service for our neighbors.  At Activity Days (for our church) they gave them some ideas on how to show service to their neighbors.  The girls made cupcakes at Britley's house and took some over to her neighbors then came over to our house and made cookies.  I love how they ran all the way there and back excitement bursting from their little bodies.

I got the free printable for the neighbor from HERE - Joy Ever After

Primary Program Tips

We had our Primary Program at church today.  The kids are always so excited about performing in front of the whole congregation and the parents are all sitting there beaming with pride. I can always tell who's child is up giving a talk or singing a solo because the parents down below have the hugest grins on their faces and the Mom's always get teary. So sweet.

I've been in primary for a long time and over the years I have come up with some helpful tips on keeping me sane and the kids happy and quiet during the many weeks of practice.  BTW I am a primary teacher for the 6-7 year olds.

Helpful Tips:

1.  When it's time to have the practices in the chapel bring word search puzzles, coloring pages, crossword puzzles so the kids will have something to keep them busy while everyone is trying to figure out who does what and who goes where.  Believe me.....2 hours of bouncy, giggly, fidgety, talking kids is enough to make you go a little cuckoo!  Bring something quite for them to do for their sake and yours.   When it's time for them to stand and sing I just give them a gentle reminder and they stand while holding their pencil and paper.  No big deal.

2.  When you have that sweet little munchkin who can't sit still during the actual primary program and you know the whole congregation is looking at him/her....give them a little massage.  I start with their hand.  Massage their fingers nice and slow.  Then their palm, then the back of the hand.  Work your way up their arm very slowly.  This will have them putty in your hand (ha-ha no pun intended).  I did this today and then had to wake up my little guy it put him right to sleep in minutes.  I'm telling you...a little back scratch or back rub while they are singing or waiting to sing works wonders in the fidgety department.

3.  Lastly: Play dough for your lesson after the program.
Those kids are going to be hopped up so high on energy and excitement that by the time you get them into your class it's going to be mayhem.  I bring a snack that helps them calm down then we do our favorite play dough lesson.  Here's how it works:

You give them a word like "LION" that they have to mold out of the play dough.
Then you tell them the Bible / Book of Mormon story that goes with what they just made.

Lion = Daniel and the Lions Den.

I'm telling you what......they LOVE this!  It doesn't matter how old the kids are 3-12 years will LOVE this guaranteed!  In fact when I walked into the classroom with the box of play dough all the kids jumped up and screamed PLAY DOUGH!!!!  I told you this was their favorite lesson.  (can you tell I do this several times a year?)

Here's some more examples of what they can sculpt out of their dough:
Whale - Jonah and the Whale
(we did this and WOW I was impressed with these 6-7 year olds sculpting abilities!)
An animal that was on the ARK, or a Rainbow, or The Ark - Noah and the Ark
A bow and arrow - Nephi
A sword - Nephi killing Laban

Well, you get the idea.  This would also make a fun Family Home Evening Activity.  I should probably do this since Cassidy isn't in my class (Abby is) and Cass gets all sad that she can't play too.

FYI - Shopping Tip:
Every year I buy this 24 pack of play dough at Target on Black Friday for $5.00I usually pick up as many as I can, at least 5 of themLast year I could only find 3 and I was sad.  These make great birthday presents, party favors, quiet time activities and so on.  At $5 bucks you can't go wrong!  So keep your eye out on Friday and pick yourself up some of these babies!

Little Funnies

I teach the 6 year olds in Primary at Church.
They are so cute and so, so funny!
They crack me up each and every week.

Last week Amberly (she's in my class♥) was wearing a new outfit.
One of the little girls came in and went to sit next to her.
She stopped...looked at Amberly's out fit and said:
(with hand motions I might add)
"I like it, I love it, I want some more of it!"
Hilarious!!!  Amberly and I are still laughing about it a week later.

This week our lesson was on Choosing the Right.
There were stories and questions and we talked about DARES.
They really liked the lesson and we had alot to discuss.
I was asking the kids how choosing the wrong makes you feel
and one little girl piped up and said:
"Choosing the wrong makes you feel -
Yucky and Mad, Grumpy and Sad"
Brilliant is she not?  I love how they can come up with such simple yet perfect truths!
 It's our new class motto.
We wrote it on the board and had everyone chanting it when they left for the day.
Cute.

I'm out of my funk.
Things are still in chaos but we took cookies
to our two favorite teachers last night
and it made us all feel happy and made the day so much sweeter.
(and I don't mean cause cookies were involved!)

Cookies can always get me out of a funk!
How about you?

Brilliance

Last week I had a brilliant idea to have our daily scripture reading in the morning in our bed.  Let me first start off by saying all four of us are-not-morning-people-at-all!!!  So mornings are a big grouchy issue at our house.  Yeah - you thought I had it all together but I don't.  Really I don't!

Here's how things work in the morning:
1)  Cassidy's alarm goes off at 6:45 where she promptly shuts it off and goes back to sleep.
2)  My alarm goes off at 7:00 where I hit snooze a few times then wake up but still lay there in hopes of another 10-15 minutes.
3)  I go in and try and wake the girls up - it doesn't work.
4)  I go get back in bed for another 5 min. before going to wake the girls up again.
5)  We then all finally get up rush around getting ready, finding clothes, eating something easy like cereal, making lunches and snacks, finding backpacks, shoes, doing hair on 2 girls plus my own, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I think you can visualize what we are doing.  I did forget to mention the nagging, whining, the crying, the bad attitudes and how I was totally bugged at everyone every single morning.

Now, the alarm goes off at 6:30am.  I still hit snooze and I still lay there for a minute before getting out of bed.  (Hey, I'm still not a morning person and I'm definitely not perfect!)
I then go and GET the girls out of their beds and put them in our bed.  They would come get in our bed anyway.  While they are waking up we read scriptures.  It gives us all a chance to stay in bed a little longer (we are getting up a little earlier so it all works out.) spend time together and boy has it changed our mornings for the better!  We are less grouchy, more organized, a lot happier and there has been a lot less fighting and crying and whining.  It's also nice that the girls are getting Daddy time since they don't see him as much.  Everyone is just plain happier in the morning with our new routine.

Like I said - I'm not perfect but hey I'm going to pat myself on the back for my brilliance on this one!

Sunday Lessons Do Work!

I teach primary at church. in fact - I'm lucky enough to teach Amberly and nine other 6 year olds every Sunday. I love it. They are so sweet and love to learn. They also love snacks, and talking and leaning back in their chairs and coloring but that's not the point.

Last week I taught this lesson - Worshiping at Church
It went well as do most lessons on Sundays.
Nothing out of the ordinary just a nice little lesson.

Yesterday Amberly was playing outside barefoot as usual and sliced her big toe wide open.
She came in dripping blood and crying.
Poor thing.
We wrapped it up in a nice big bandage because we all know:
"The bigger the bandage the better it feels!"
Am I right? I'm right!

Last night as she was going to sleep she was very upset and worried about how her toe looked. She is my little sweetie that is aware of how she and everyone else looks on a daily basis and will comment on the fact. Remember how she wakes up and immediately goes into the bathroom to brush her hair even though she is still half asleep? So you can imagine how a big white bandage on her big toe would cause concern for her and her fashion sense.

Then it hit me! The lesson I taught last week at church. I retold her this story:
*from the primary manual or you can get a copy here*
Tell the children about a boy who had a problem that almost made him stop coming to church. His name was Vaughn Featherstone, and he later became a General Authority. Introduce the story by explaining that when Vaughn Featherstone was young, his family was quite poor and couldn’t afford much clothing.

“I had a pair of shoes that I’d wear to church. They weren’t the best shoes. They had holes in the bottom sole, so I’d cut out pieces of cardboard [from a cereal box] and slide them in as an insole. When I went to church I would sit with both feet flat on the floor; I didn’t want to raise one leg and have someone see [the printing on the cardboard from a cereal box] across the bottom of my shoe. I’d go off to church that way, and everything was fine until those shoes wore out. Then I didn’t know what I would do. I remember it was Saturday, and I thought, ‘I’ve got to go to church. Over at church I am somebody. They really care about me.’ I remember thinking that through, and I went to a little box of shoes some neighbors had given us. I went through them, but I could find only one pair of shoes that would fit me. … They were a pair of women’s nurses’ shoes. I thought, ‘How can I wear those? They’ll laugh me to scorn over at church.’ And so I decided I wouldn’t wear them, and I wouldn’t go to church.”
  • • How would you feel if you had been in Brother Featherstone’s place?
  • • What would you have done?

Let several children respond; then continue with the story:

“I went through that night, and the next morning … I knew I had to go! … I decided what to do. I would run over there very early and sit down close to the front before anybody got there. I thought, ‘I’ll put my feet back under the pew [bench] so no one can see them, and then I’ll wait till everyone leaves. After they’re gone I’ll come running home half an hour later or something.’ That was my plan. I dashed over to church half an hour early, and it worked. Nobody was there. I put my feet back under the bench. Pretty soon everyone came in, and then all of a sudden someone announced: ‘We will now be separated for classes.’ I had forgotten you had to go to class. … I was terrified. The ushers started coming down the aisle, they got to our row, and everybody got up and left. But I just sat there. I couldn’t move. I knew I couldn’t for fear that someone would see my shoes. But the social pressure was intense. That whole meeting just seemed to stop and wait until I moved, so I had to move. I got up and just followed the class downstairs.

“I think I learned the greatest lesson I have ever learned in my life that day. I went downstairs, and the teacher had us sit in a big half-circle. Each of my shoes felt two feet in diameter. I can’t tell you how embarrassed I was. I watched, but, do you know, not one of those eight- and nine-year-old children in that class laughed at me. Not one of them looked at me. No one pointed at my shoes. My teacher didn’t look. I was looking all the time. I was watching everybody to see if anyone was looking at me. … Of course they saw those nurses’ shoes that I had to wear to church. But they had the fine instinct not to laugh” (Vaughn J. Featherstone, “Acres of Diamonds,” in Speeches of the Year, 1974 [Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1975], pp. 351–52).

I love telling stories like this to the children. They are at the age where they sit and you can see them visually seeing the story unfold before their little eyes. This story had them entranced. And guess what? Amberly woke up this morning, got ready, put on her fancy flip-flops that showed her big white bandage and went to church with a smile. She even sat in the pew next to me with her feet kicked up under the pew and whispered, "Mom, I'm just like that man in the story!" Yes sweetie, you are.

Another Testiment of Christ

We went to the Mark Mabry exhibit tonight. It was amazing, moving and heartfelt. The minute I walked into the room I was overcome with emotion. I had to hold back tears. The pictures were so beautiful.

We were lucky enough to get to sit with him and listen to his answers to many of our questions. What an experience. These new pictures are from 3rd Nephi in The Book of Mormon when Christ came to the Americas.

If you haven't seen Reflections of Christ, Mark Mabry's first exhibit. Go and watch that one as well (HERE). It will lift your spirits. ♥

Tuesday Tell All

Today was spent running around checking things off my list. Only two days left until the party and then I can have my regular life back. I didn't realize how much I do on a normal daily basis until I haven't been doing any of it. It's O.K. though - all worth it in the end.

Today I had my cute little 9 year old Activity Day girls over for a mini spa day. (We meet twice a month to work on goals for our church) We sat out on the back porch and did mani's and pedi's. It was fun and Cassidy opted to GIVE them pedi's instead of GETTING one. She even did polka dots on one of the girls toes. The girl told Cassidy, "I didn't think you would do a good job at first but I was wrong! Mine look the best!" I'm pretty sure Cassidy was feeling good about herself after that!

Of course Abby was right in the mix taking off her nail polish (that was just put on yesterday) so she could have a fresh color. I swear that girl is the girlyest girl I have yet to meet. Dresses, nail polish, shoes, shoes and more shoes! I think I'm in trouble!

While I was helping one of the girls I was reaching for a cotton ball and I fell right on the hard cement. Just what I needed!!! Now my back and neck hurt and I'm more stiff than normal. Hopefully it will go away after a good nights rest. I'm crossing my fingers!!!

Dinner tonight was chili and Frito's with a side of American Idol. Is it just me or is Mariah Carey a little weird? I didn't know she was such a song writer!! More #1's than Elvis?? Anyway, she just seems a little......................full of herself and in the clouds at the same time. Am I off here?? Do people really think that highly of her????

One positive thing that has happened around here is Cassidy and her Abacus. It has finally clicked and she is really excited about it. She is doing harder math problems in her head and getting them right!!! She is passing her tests each week and her confidence is growing by leaps and bounds! The other night Kurt and Pam came over and she was doing some math for them without her Abacus - just using her brain. I think that set it off and now all she wants to do is math! The teacher said that it takes about a year for it to really set in and then it goes a lot faster. It's been a year this month and she was right!!! I'm so proud of Cassidy!! I'm also so happy that she is finally loving it!

Anyway, I'm off to bed - tomorrow is another long day. The good thing is that Tax Day is over so hopefully I will have my husband back. Which means more time for me to catch up on all my blogging friends. I haven't read a blog in weeks!!!! Can't wait to see what's been going on out there in blogging land.

52 Blessings Week 14

The 178th Annual General Conference of the
Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

This week I am very blessed to have been able to watch conference and learn from our wonderful leaders on how to be a better Mother, Person, Friend, Daughter, Neighbor and Saint.

I love my DVR because it allows me to watch as I have the time and if the girls need me I can pause and go and help them. I can also take a little nap and not feel guilty about it. I also love that I can go back and watch my favorites over again and learn even more the second time around.

This year the girls watched most of the Saturday sessions with us - happily- while coloring in a conference packet I printed out from an e-mail I got. It helped them to really want to watch and learn and I hope next year they will sit through even longer.

I will post more on my favorite talks as soon as they become available online.

Just a Few

I always wished I could fly and this is a perfect picture
of how I always imagined it would be!

I haven't been getting my camera out and I have missed it. Friday and Saturday I went a little crazy and was shooting just about everything. I told Cassidy that everyone is going to think I like Abby better than her because Abby lets me take her picture (so I have a lot) and she doesn't. She didn't seem to care. I think she's at that age - please help me!

So here are "just a few" of my favorites from this weekend. I didn't edit them - sorry. I just am not good at that yet - so these are real and raw!
This is Tom's brother Gary and family on Nephi's Baptism Day.

Don't they look like they are having so much fun?

This little cutie is our nephew Ammon and
he has the bluest eyes in a family of all browns just like me!

Amberly and London two cute little cousins
who hopefully keep their sweet friendship that they have now.

Sunday Thoughts

The lesson on Sunday was, "Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy." Two things stick out in my mind from this lesson that I wanted to remember. One was, this lady was visiting and seemed to have not been in awhile. She told a very touching yet disturbing story of her at work one night. It was a little uncomfortable until she ended with her saying, would she know the Savior when he came? Or would she be too busy trying to finish her work and go home? Sometimes I myself don't pay attention and just try to get through my day. I need to be better about this and have more compassion for those around me.

The second thought was on our lesson in Relief Society. It was on Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. This comment made me think all day.
"When my Great Grandmother was young, people referred to Sunday as The Holy Sabbath. When my Grandmother was young, Sunday was called The Sabbath Day.
When my Mother was young, we called it Sunday.
And now we (our generation) just call it the weekend."
How sad is that? We need to remember that Sunday is a day for rest and no matter how much we have on out "to do list" we need to slow down and remember this day.

Saturday is a Special Day

My favorite picture of the day......Cassidy singing into the barrel wrench!

Saturday morning started bright and early -7:30- with us heading down to the church. Tom is the Emergency Prep. guy in the ward and does a 911 University course every few months on a different subject. Today's topic - Water!
He had pre-ordered water barrels for anyone who needed them. He ordered about 70 55 gal barrels and the guy brought 30 gal. barrels so everyone got 2 for 1! It made the church parking lot look very prepared!

The guys had 3 pressure washers and were washing out the barrels (they smelled so good! Dr. Pepper and Orange Crush!), then pouring bleach into them (1/3 c. per. 55 gal) and soaking the caps in bleach to sanitize. When they were done, all you had to do was go home, set up your barrel in the place of your choice and fill it (coffee filter provided)! How easy-breezy was that?! Some people were a little skeptical, maybe because they haven't gone without water. (We lived with a well for the past 7 years and the water went out a lot!) But the workshop went great and Tom did a super job getting everything ready!
After the water workshop we headed over to Cole's birthday party. We were hot, sweaty and the girls were bored so it was heaven to jump into the pool. The kids had so much fun at the Pirate Party! Mindy, you did a bang up job! Thanks for all the fun! Loved the tat's, the headbands, the scavenger hunt and the cake!~!!! Oh and the food.....I'm still craving that chicken salad!

Aren't these the cutest pictures! My little pirates!

After that I was so tired I could barley drive home. I walked into the house, dropped my purse and went straight to bed. I didn't even take off my wet bathing suit! I laid my head on the pillow and was OUT!!! That has never happened before. I have no idea what my kids did for the next two hours because Tom was asleep next to me. That heat zapped every last ounce of energy out of me.
Later that night we got some movies and dinner for the kids. The end to a fun filled day!

lucky duck

Tom's Sunday Story:

Church is over. We all get in the car. It's hot, very hot in the car. Tom says he has to tell me something but I can't tell anyone. I told him he better not say anything with "the little ears" in the back seat if he doesn't want anyone to know. He said that's not a problem. So he starts:

He was sitting in EQ happy and content with his nice little Sunday. He was listening to the announcements, and realized about 30 seconds before they finished that he was the one that was supposed to give the lesson today. He also realizes that he doesn't know what lesson they are on, nor does he have his lesson manual. Fear strikes. Then, peace. He said to himself (in the 30 second window that he has before he has to get up in front of the whole EQ) "no problem right? I have been listening to conference talks 24/7 in the car for months!" I'll just pick one of those! Thanks to Matt he even has the latest April conference - all four sessions! Good thing, keep reading.

So he sat a moment more, thought and chose

He got up, gave the lesson without notes, book or copy of the Ensign. Just from memory. Wow! Is that a little bit of inspiration or what? When he told me that ,I looked at him and said, "that's what lesson we had! That's the lesson you were supposed to teach!"

I asked him if anyone had figured him out? He said no, they had a discussion, people commented, it went well. Little stinker. I would have died! I would have said I was going to throw up and went home! I don't mind giving talks or lessons in front of people but without warning? Nope, couldn't have done it.

So, note to self. Get some conference talks in my car so in case of emergency I don't go into the bathroom and heave my guts out!

side note: he said don't tell anyone and here I am blogging it! (giggle)
